Analysis of static friction and elastic forces in a nanowire bent on a flat surface: A comparative study

ZnO nanowires bent to a complex shape and held in place by static friction force from supporting flat surface are investigated experimentally and theoretically. The complex shapes are obtained by bending the nanowires inside a scanning electron microscope with a sharp tip attached to a nanopositioner. Several methods previously described in the literature are applied along with author's original method to calculate the distributed friction force and stored elastic energy in the nanowires from the bending profile. Under sun-light illumination, the shape of the atmospheric oxygen bands (O 2 -B, 687 nm and O 2 -A, 760 nm) of the vegetation radiance is modified by chlorophyll fluorescence. However for far-range measurements, atmospheric effects also modify this shape. In this study, measurements in O 2 -A and O 2 -B absorption bands have been performed at different altitudes up to 3123 m over bare soil and wheat fields. It is observed that bands depth increase significantly with altitude. In O 2 -B band, the total magnitude of variation is of the same order of magnitude as the change induced by vegetation fluorescence, while it is much greater in O 2 -A band. First observation of strong OZI rule violation in πN interactions

The data of the CERN WA56 experiment that triggered the fast proton produced in the $\pi^{+}p$ and $\pi^{-}p$ interactions at beam momenta 20 GeV/c and 12 GeV/c, respectively, are used to analyse the final states $ p_{f} \phi (\omega)\pi^{\pm}$. A large excess (up to two orders of magnitude) of the $\phi/\omega$ cross sections ratio over the OZI prediction is observed.

Presence of a soft excess between 0.6 keV and 0.9 keV in the energy spectrum of Cir X-1

Abstract We report on the results of a new BeppoSAX (0.12–200 keV) observation of the peculiar X–ray binary source Circinus X–1 (Cir X–1) near the apastron. We produced a color-color diagram and selected seven different zones. We fitted the spectra obtained from each zone using a model consisting of a blackbody component, at a temperature of ∼0.5 keV, and a Comptonized component, with a seed-photon temperature of ∼1 keV, electron temperature of ∼2.7 keV and optical depth of ∼11. A soft excess between 0.6 keV and 0.9 keV is present in four out of the seven extracted spectra. Theoretical interpretation of the Ds+→π+π0η decay and the nature of a0(980)

Abstract In a recent paper [1] , the BESIII Collaboration reported the so-called first observation of pure W-annihilation decays D s + → a 0 + ( 980 ) π 0 and D s + → a 0 0 ( 980 ) π + . The measured absolute branching fractions are, however, puzzlingly larger than those of other measured pure W-annihilation decays by at least one order of magnitude. In addition, the relative phase between the two decay modes is found to be about 180 degrees. In this letter, we show that all these can be easily understood if the a 0 ( 980 ) is a dynamically generated state from K ¯ K and πη interactions in coupled channels. Circumstantial Evidence for Rotating Mass Matrix from Fermion Mass and Mixing Data

It is shown that existing data on the mixing between up and down fermion states and on the hierarchical mass ratios between fermion generations, as far as can be so analysed at present, are all consistent with the two phenomena being both consequences of a mass matrix rotating in generation space with changing energy scale. As a result, the rotating mass matrix can be traced over some 14 orders of magnitude in energy from the mass scale of the $t$-quark at 175 GeV to below that of the atmospheric neutrino at 0.05 eV.

We derive stringent constraints on neutrino speed, weak equivalence principle violation, Lorentz invariance violation, and dual lensing from the first high-energy astrophysical neutrino source: TXS $0506+056$. Observation of neutrino (IceCube-170922A) and photons in a similar time frame and from the same direction is used to derive these limits. We describe ways in which these constraints can be further improved by orders of magnitude.

The phi NN coupling from chiral loops

Starting from effective Lagrangians which combine a gauge formulation of Vector Meson Dominance with Chiral Lagrangians, the coupling of the phi to the nucleon, which is zero at tree level due to the OZI rule, is calculated perturbatively considering loop contributions to the electric and magnetic form factors. We obtain reasonably smaller values for both form factors than those for rho NN and consistent with the expected order of magnitude of the OZI rule violation.

Observation of Very Narrow Linewidths in the Fluorescence Excitation Spectra of Single Conjugated Polymer Chains at 1.2 K

Fluorescence emission and excitation spectra of single poly[2-methoxy-5-(2'-ethyl-hexyloxy)-1,4-phenylene vinylene] polymer molecules embedded in poly(methylmethacrylate) have been recorded at 1.2 K. The ubiquitous spectral diffusion causes large variations in the spectral shape and apparent linewidth in the emission spectra. Nevertheless, we find very narrow (approximately 0.1 cm(-1)) purely electronic zero-phonon lines in the excitation spectra, which are 2 orders of magnitude smaller than previous estimates of the homogeneous linewidth. These results complement the molecular description of the low energy transitions in conjugated polymers.

Triple resonant four-wave mixing: A microwatt continuous-wave laser source in the vacuum ultraviolet region at 120 nm

We present a vacuum ultraviolet laser source by four-wave mixing in mercury vapour based on solid-state laser systems. Maximum powers of 6μW were achieved with an increase of four orders of magnitude in efficiency.
